Beautiful Views on the @MillerBoatLine to See Put-In-Bay

Miller Boat Line

When visiting Put-In-Bay you must ride the Miller Boat Line Ferry. The ferry makes trips every half an hour to Put-in-Bay (South Bass Island) & Middle Bass Island from Catawba, Ohio all day everyday! Miller Boat Line offers a great view and easy transportation between the islands and mainland.

miller boat line 2When we arrived at the Ferry drop off area I had never been there before, so I was not really sure what to do or where to go! I asked the extremely helpful and sweet ladies working the ticket booth my many, many questions! Things like what is there to see and where are the best places to take the kiddos and of course the most important, what’s there to eat! She recommended several places to visit and then offer me the Travels Guide, which is chalked full of great stuff! I wasn’t sure if we should bring our van, she said it was no problem to take our van but suggested riding the tram to get a scenic informative tour of Put In Bay. So we left our van at the drop off parking lot and walked onto the ferry! It was a great choice!

My girls were so excited to ride along the top of the ferry getting a great view of the water and even doing their own reenactment of the Titanic by leaning against the rails screaming, KING OF THE WORLD! Weather permitting this is the way to go! I think riding along in the van would have been a lot less enjoyable! The fresh cool air blowing in our faces and seeing the other islands and boats splashing around, has to be viewed from outside your vehicle! The ride was extremely smooth and very few bumps during the docking! These guys know what they were doing!

Fun Facts about Lake Erie:
Did you know that Lake Erie is the 4th largest Great Lake but smallest in depth and the 11th largest in the world! While on the water keep an eye out for the 40 foot monster that is suggested to live in Lake Erie and of all the 4 Great Lakes, Lake Erie produces more fish each year for human consumption than any other Lake!

History about Miller Boat Lines:
In 1971 Lee Miller appointed Bill Market to take over as manager of the boat line. Market, a fourth generation islander, had miller boat line put in bayworked for Millers as a purser and deckhand since 1954. With the loss of young Bill Miller, who also was Market’s best friend, Market became captain of the vessel William M Miller. When Lee passed away in 1973, Mary Miller asked Market to take over operations of the company.

Put-in-Bay’s growth and rebounding popularity became apparent in the 1970’s. Local residents and developers began to preserve and showcase the fine private homes and downtown buildings, many of which had fallen into disrepair. Historic buildings such as the Colonial, Park Hotel, Blacksmith Shop, Crescent, and Round House were restored and upgraded.

Funding began to flow into the DeRivera Park, South Bass Island State Park, and infrastructure. The 1970’s high water erosion of the shoreline surrounding the Perry’s Monument (National Park) was alleviated with the construction of the unique concave concrete breakwall on either side of the memorial grounds. Put-in-Bay began to move in fast-forward, and tourism became the island’s economic mainstay.

Living in Cincinnati, the only thing you can count on, is how unpredictable the weather is here. One day it is 10 degrees and the next 55 degrees, in January! Always keeping us on our toes as to what we need to wear and bring just in case it gets cold! So getting to visit a place that is always 82 degrees, was just what we needed.

The rooms at Castaway Bay are more than enough. With 6 of us, we easily fit right into their suites with 2 bunk beds, a king size bed with 1 regular closet with a safe and a over-sized walk in closet! Not to mention the large bathroom and vanity area that allowed us to take showers and get kiddos to brush teeth and hair without creating a long line for bed time tasks!

The view is something that, this weekend was a little covered with ice! But would probably be my favorite part during a summer time visit! The lake was completely covered with ice but there was a great breeze and beautiful scenery from the 2 chairs on our balcony! This would most likely be my quiet place after a long, fun day at Cedar Point! But if it gets too cold you can always pull up a seat and get nice and warm with the large fireplace in the main lobby near the gift shops! Plus shopping can always make me warm up buying all those souvenirs that I need to take home!
