Celebrate Shark Week at Newport Aquarium!

Newport Aquarium, the Shark Capital of the Midwest, announces Shark Week activities

Aquarium joins Species Survival Plan for zebra sharks, to add 2 females on exhibit

NEWPORT, Ky. — The introduction of two female zebra sharks highlights a jaw-some lineup of Shark Week (July 5-12) activities at Newport Aquarium.

The addition of the two female zebra sharks will increase the number of exhibited sharks at Newport Aquarium to 56 across 15 species, the most shark at newport aqauriumin the Midwest.

As part of a breeding program sanctioned by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), both female zebra sharks will be introduced to the Coral Reef tunnel during a media event on July 6. The two females will eventually make their way to the Surrounded by Sharks tank, where two adult male zebra sharks reside.

The AZA’s Species Survival Plan for zebra sharks calls for accredited institutions to help develop the population by arranging for biologically distant matches to meet in environments conducive to mating.

From touching sharks, to viewing sharks above, below and around, the most shark-infested place to celebrate Shark Week is Newport Aquarium, where there is always more new to see and do:

·         Shark Bridge – Guests can experience sharks like never before by crossing the world’s first and only Shark Bridge. Included with admission, the Shark Bridge is a 75-foot-long rope suspension bridge that hangs just inches above nearly two dozen sharks.

·         Surrounded by Sharks – Newport Aquarium’s signature exhibit, guests can travel through an 85-foot-long acrylic tunnel inside a 385,000-gallon tank as seven species of shark – scalloped hammerhead, sand tiger, whitetip, blacktip, zebra, sandbar and nurse – swim over and above.

·         Shark Tank Dive Shows – Guests catch their first and largest views of shark rays and sharks at the Shark Ray Bay Theater, where our shark dive shows feature a scuba diver addressing and taking questions from the audience about the biology and conservation of sharks and other animals found inside the tank. (July 5 and July 10-12: Noon, 12:20 p.m., 12:40 p.m., 2 p.m., 2:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.)

·         Shark Feedings – Newport Aquarium performs public feedings for its sharks and shark rays, where guests can watch biologists feed from either the Shark Ray Bay Theater, the Surrounded by Sharks tunnels, or through a biologist’s point-of-view from the Shark Tank Overlook. (Shark tank feed 11 a.m. July 6 and July 8; Large shark feed 11 a.m. July 7; Shark ray feedings 1:30 p.m. July 6-10)

·         Shark Touch Pool – At the Shark Central exhibit, guests have the opportunity to touch dozens of sharks. An Animal Experience Specialist teaches guests the proper technique to touch sharks and helps them understand each species in this international collection. (9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily)

·         Sharks After Dark Overnight – Guests can sink their teeth into some great shark facts and sleep safely as they swim above. Every Overnight Adventure includes exclusive aquarium access, shark-themed games and activities. (7:30 p.m. July 10)

·         Shark Week T-Shirts for Conservation – Officially licensed Discovery Channel Shark Week T-shirts will be available for purchase at the Newport Aquarium gift shop starting July 5. A portion of the revenue generated from these Shark Week tees will be donated to the WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium, which supports aquatic conservation.

Wild Florida: Business & Babies are Booming at Wild Florida’s Wildlife Park!

wild florida

(OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla.)—Wild Florida is proud to announce the births of a bevy of bouncing babies-some critically endangered-that are thriving and melting hearts at its Wildlife Park in Kenansville, Fla.

lemur at wild florida

Phoenix and Rain, two extremely curious, baby twin red-ruffed lemurs, were born at Wild Florida on April 29. Native to Madagascar, red-ruffed lemurs are one of the island’s largest primates with a height and tail-length of approximately 2-feet, respectively. Due to logging and habitat encroachment, the International Union of Conservation Nation placed the red-ruffed lemur on its critically endangered list. In captivity, red-ruffed lemurs can live beyond 30 years. Phoenix and Rain love to munch on fruits, veggies and ‘lemur’ biscuits. Mommy “Lucy” is doing just fine.

Dad “Guy” and Mom “Ana,” native to the country of Guyana, South America, recently gave birth to this adorable baby sloth on May 22 at Wild Florida. While this little guy is classified as a two-toed sloth, two-toed sloths actually have two fingers and three toes. While he will eventually grow up and spend his life hanging upside down from the trees like his parents, he’s definitely enjoying playtime with his favorite Wild Florida trainers.

Duke and Duchess, baby bobcats born April 7, are now on display to the public at Wild Florida! Weighing in right around 5 pounds now, Duke and Duchess are curious as cats, super rambunctious, and love playing with Trigger, Wild Florida’s baby white-tailed buck (see below). Bobcats are native to North America, thrive in the humid swamps of Florida, and can live up to 30 years in captivity. Wild Florida is offering guests an exclusive opportunity to interact and play with the babies for a small fee.

Meet Trigger, the baby white-tailed buck that indeed is BFFs with the baby bobcats. Born May 21, Trigger loves to eat plants, grass, acorns and fruit. Did you know a white-tailed deer has a special stomach that allows it to eat poisonous wild mushrooms and plants? A white-tailed deer actually has a four-chambered stomach that allows it to consume food and digest it later in a safer setting. Wild Florida is also offering guests an exclusive opportunity to interact with Trigger, a white-tailed deer that’s native to Florida, for a small fee.

The baby lemurs and sloth are expected to be on display to the public late summer. Exclusive interactions with the baby bobcats and baby deer cost $20. Other animal interactions include adult sloths, foxes, and porcupines. For more information on the animal interactions, please contact Wild Florida at 407-957-3135 and ask for Animal Experience. For more information on the babies, please contact Candice Coleman at 314-606-1167. Cedar Point: We Love Rougarou & Hotel Breaker!

cedar point park

Going to Cedar Point has become a family tradition that my kiddos absolutely love! There are so many sites to see not only up there but also on the drive up! We get to go through Dayton and stop off and see a few sites such as the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, Scene75 Entertainment Center or the Dayton Dragons Baseball! Then a little further stop and check out the Armstrong Air & Space Museum or check out the sites in Cleveland such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland Zoo or the West Side Market! We love checking out the sites on the way to vacation! Want to head straight through, then be sure to pack activity bags to keep those kiddos busy!

Once in Cedar Point there are so many sites to see, Castaway Bay, Miller Boat Line, Put In Bay and Lake Erie! But once you get into the park, there are so many new rides and sites to see, plan to spend the day catching rays, hitting the hills of the thrilling coasters and just plain having fun!!

cedar point rougarou

WHAT’S NEW:
Cedar Point announced last year that they would be unleashing the Rougarou! Named after a terrifying werewolf-like creature in French folklore, Rougarou [roo-guh-roo] feeds on screams and lurks in and around the swampy lagoon at the center of the park, shared with other coasters like Iron Dragon and Top Thrill Dragster.

Rougarou’s floorless trains will take riders on an epic journey at speeds reaching 60 mph as their feet dangle just inches above the track and the murky waters below. The trains will be manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, Monthey, Switzerland, the same team behind rides like Raptor and GateKeeper, and will transform the ride experience dramatically while utilizing the structure and track of the former Mantis roller coaster.

The ride begins with a climb to the top of the 145-foot-tall first hill, providing amazing views of the Cedar Point skyline. After reaching the apex, the trains will make a 180-degree turn to the right and plummet 137 feet, at a 52-degree angle, to within inches above the water. Thrill-seekers caught in Rougarou’s grasp will then be flipped upside-down by a 119-foot-tall vertical loop, spun around a 103-foot-tall dive loop, whipped around a highly-banked 360-degree turn and then twisted upside-down again by the world’s only inclined loop on a floorless coaster, angled at a wicked 45 degrees. Just when guests think the ride is over, the steel beast will take them through a 360-degree flat spin, tight and twisty turns and a figure-eight finale. Riders must be 54” tall to ride Rougarou.

“Rougarou is going to be a fantastic addition to our coaster lineup and our guests are going to love it,” said Jason McClure, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “With the swampy waters below, the vibrant colors of the supports and track, lighting and other effects, it will be a ride like no other at the park.”

If you haven’t had a chance to ride it yet this year, this is a must have on your rides list for your next Cedar Point trip. My girls love this ride and said it was “AMAZING”!! Turns and flips and hills and drops just to mention a few of their favorite things! Who would have thought my girls would have been such thrill seekers! hotel breaker room cedar point

HOTEL BREAKER REMODEL:
If you need a place to stay, which I’m sure you will when visiting Cedar Point, the newly renovated Hotel Breaker is the place to stay! Rooms are spacious, amazingly decorated and fit my whole family (which is a huge bonus)!

2015 will also mark the debut of the newly-renovated Hotel Breakers. Located along the mile-long Cedar Point Beach, Hotel Breakers will complete its two-year transformation into the ultimate resort destination. Along with a new exterior, the modernized hotel will have a new entrance portal, classic interior finishes, newly-furnished and remodeled rooms with LCD TV’s, new furniture, bedding and décor, and many other amenities and offerings. The two things that make my visit the most important, great water pressure and comfy beds- can’t travel without those two necessities!

Additional enhancements include a new Starbucks and the Surf Lounge bar inside the famous rotunda, widened exterior green space with panoramic views of Lake Erie and an outdoor water play area with zero depth entry and splash features. TGI Friday’s for dinner is what we had and have to say the service was great- loved that it was in the hotel allowing us to stay on site for the whole day!

hotel breaker cedar pointWe want to provide a well-rounded and complete vacation experience for our guests, and the enhancements at the Hotel Breakers will help them have just that,” said Jason McClure. “It will have a fun and fresh feel, is steps away from the park and it’s a great place to start new family traditions.”

The charming waterfront hotel first opened its doors in 1905 as the “largest and greatest hotel on the Great Lakes.” Known for its breathtaking views and cool summer breezes, Hotel Breakers has been an important part of any complete Cedar Point experience. Notable guests over the years have included celebrities such as sharpshooter Annie Oakley, comedians Abbott and Costello, composer John Philip Sousa and six U.S. presidents, including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

When you arrive at the hotel the front of the hotel is just amazing! Perfectly landscaped and full of color and beautiful flowers, my girls said they felt like royalty when we entered Hotel Breaker!

As you enter the hotel you see beautiful stained glass windows, interesting carousel portraits, large majestic carousel horses and my favorite – the entryway into the rotunda, the circular indoor balconies are beautiful! I could have stared up at it the whole night!

cedar point hotel breakerOther amenities include outdoor two pools and Jacuzzis, access to the Cedar Point Beach and Boardwalk, a gift shop, arcade, exercise room, three restaurants, Early Entry (access to some of the biggest rides and coasters before the park opens to the general public), discounted Cedar Point admission tickets, complimentary Wi-Fi and the comfort and convenience of staying right next to the rides and roller coasters of Cedar Point.

The kiddie outdoor pool looked amazing! It wasn’t quite warm enough just yet during our visit to play in it, but with slides and water spraying every where, your kiddos will definitely enjoy splashing around! We did get to enjoy the indoor pool as it did not close until 11pm, giving us a hour to swim after we left the park! Then walk out to the back patio and sit by the fire pits or head to the beach, which remains open until midnight!

Cincinnati: Tips to Attend Bunbury Music Festival

bunbury festival 2015

Bunbury Music Festival opened yesterday with some great musical acts and was sold out! Cincinnati is loving the bands and completely enjoying the music, drinks and socializing- Just check out Instagram and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I thought I would give you a few tips if you are planning on attending today or tomorrow that may make your visit a little better! matt and kim bunbury music festval 2015

Bring a Few Things:
You will need your Driver’s License or State Id so have it with you. If you are a bringing a bag, they will check it so open it up and show them what’s inside. No weapons, coolers, food, pets, and so on are not permitted. To see the complete list, check here! It will be hot, there will be sun, there maybe rain, it will be crowded and loud! So a few things you may want to bring are things like sunblock, sunglasses or a hat, a blanket, poncho or umbrella, bug spray, ear plugs, hand sanitizer (bathrooms will be crowded and port a potties will run out of it) and your camera (no professional type cameras will be permitted). You can also bring a bottle of water with you, don’t throw it away when your done, there are water fountains and you can refill your bottle all day. You are not permitted to bring food or other drinks, so water bottles are great!

Entering the Venue:
The lines yesterday were wrapped around many, many blocks of downtown Cincinnati. But with that being said, the lines moved very quickly. The biggest hold up is the people that did not have their tickets readily available and some time to put bracelets on each and every guest walking in the venue! The staff was very friendly and patient but have your ticket ready, this will help keep the line moving and less time missing out on the music! They have also opened additional entrances to allow for a quicker entrance into the venue- Pete Rose Way at the end of Eggleston Ave by the entrance at Sawyer Point, at Butler as well as Public Landing by Yeatman’s Cove.

Bring Cash:
If you plan on eating or drinking while you are there, you will need cash to pay! There are ATM’s on site, but I have to tell you, I don’t think anyone either remember to bring cash or just didn’t bring enough, the lines for the ATM where always very long! So stop and grab plenty of cash before you come to help save time  and suffering of standing in line.

bunbury music 2015Parking:
Parking is available everywhere downtown, but can get pretty pricey! I paid $10 to park but walked about 4 blocks to get to the venue. The lots directly near the festival were $25 per vehicle to park. So have cash or try out Uber-the official safe ride of Bunbury! Use promo code BUNWEB15 for up to $20 off your FIRST ride. You can sign up here! You can also take a bike on the Cincinnati Bike Rental at Wheel Fun Rentals starting at $8 a day.

Download the App:
Save this handy schedule to your phone or download the Bunbury App at the links below and build your own personal schedule!
App Store: http://apple.co/1IT7vQh
Google Play: http://bit.ly/1PsPWqj

Bathrooms:
There are several bathrooms and port a potties but the lines are pretty long, so be prepared and just bring a friend to stand in line with to pass the time! Here’s the map in case you need to find beverages & bathrooms! → http://bit.ly/1Q4l6tD
I received tickets to attend Bunbury Music Festival in exchange for a honest review. No other compensation was received and as always my opinion is 100% my own.

CINCINNATI (Wednesday, June 3, 2015) – Typical “welcome to the neighborhood” gifts can come in all shapes, sizes and forms – from a pie or plate of cookies to a fruit basket or even a small potted plant. In rare cases, it can also mean adorning the entry-level walls in a neighbor’s new office building with artwork, as in the case of the Art Academy of Cincinnati (AAC), who has done just that for new neighbor Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC).

Although 3CDC moved into its new home at 1203 Walnut Street in December 2014, the renovated building was not fully completed at the time of the move. A number of office spaces still needed to be built out, and 3CDC still had a few walls that needed decorating in order to liven the organization’s new workspace. One such space was the white-walled entry to the office, whose only color at the time of the move was the 3CDC logo, hanging in large letters along the back wall.

Looking to remedy the problem this spring, a member of the 3CDC development team offered a large wall in the ground-level entryway of the 3CDC office building to the organization’s new neighbor, the AAC (located right around the block at 1212 Jackson Street), for the display of student artwork. 3CDC’s plan was to rotate in new work on a quarterly basis, and the thinking was that the collaboration would be mutually beneficial – real world experience for AAC students, and vibrant, ever-changing, artwork to brighten 3CDC’s entryway.

“As a Professor, I believe that our students should be, and are, prepared to leave school and immediately begin to practice as professionals in the real world,” said Keith Benjamin, the AAC professor tasked with choosing which student’s artwork would be displayed. “This new connection to 3CDC will add to the list of opportunities that our students benefit from to refine their skills while still in school.”

In collaboration with Galen Crawford, AAC Director of Student Services, Benjamin recommended Senior painting major, Brian Cobb (AAC ’15) to be the first AAC student to exhibit his work in the 3CDC entryway. Today, those entering 3CDC’s new office are greeted with five of Cobb’s vivid paintings as they make their way to the elevator, offering the recent graduate a showcase for his work, and providing 3CDC employees and visitors with something other than a plain white wall to look at as they arrive at the building.

“My hope is that this partnership will continue so that many more students can benefit from the experience,” Benjamin said. “I also hope that 3CDC benefits from the exposure to the intense creativity happening on the other side of the block.”

Clearwater Marine Aquarium to Release Sparky, a Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle

sparky clearwater marine

Clearwater, FL (June 1, 2015)Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), a marine life rescue center, has rehabilitated a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle named ‘Sparky’ and will be releasing it on Tuesday, June 2 on Clearwater Beach behind the Sandpearl Resort at 10.30am.

Sparky was brought to Clearwater Marine Aquarium on January 21, 2015, rescued by one of CMA’s divers who discovered him floating 22 miles offshore, west of Clearwater Pass. Upon intake, it was noted that Sparky was missing his right rear flipper (potential birth defect) and had a small abrasion on the top of his head.  He was also suffering from nutritional issues.

Nutrition was provided to Sparky through an IV solution named Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) which provides all nutrition, or total nutrition, intravenously.  The formula contains protein, carbohydrates, glucose, fat, vitamins, and minerals and is applied to injured or chronically ill sea turtles that are unable to eat in the traditional manner.  Clearwater Marine Aquarium has pioneered the use of this treatment in sea turtles, which is also often used in human patients.

As CMA dealt with Sparky’s nutrition issues, it was discovered that he had a slight case of pneumonia, which required a medical regimen to treat. Sparky now has a clean bill of health and is ready for release back into the Gulf of Mexico.

Since 2010, CMA has provided medical care to 379 sea turtles.  This is the 11th sea turtle CMA has released in 2015. Duke Energy helps support Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation program.

Turtle release details:

- Media and the public are invited to attend the release on Clearwater Beach at Sandpearl Resort.  Please arrive by 10.30 am, June 2.

- Media should inform the Sandpearl Resort valet they are covering the Clearwater Marine Aquarium turtle release.

Sea Turtle Nesting Update: To date, Clearwater Marine Aquarium has located 24 loggerhead nests this season, which began May 1 and concludes the end of October.
