Travel: Ways to Save During Spring Break Vacation

Each year families spend thousands of dollars on vacations, keeping us all stressing over our budget or just skipping vacations all together! Average per night hotels cost in the range of $150-$300 and during holidays or peak travel times, such as Spring Break, you may pay more than double for your daily stay! With a family of 6, this is just not in our budget! Finding new ways to save is a must have for us and with these tips I know you will save hundreds of dollars on your next vacation too!

Pick Different Destinations– Each year for spring break families and college students want to hit the beach to get in the sun and have a good time! The problem with this is, everyone wants to do this, creating a busier atmosphere but also allowing hotels, restaurants and entertainment facilities the ability to increase their prices due to the demand! So look at other great destination locations such as Gatlingburg for instance, that are great for you and your family! Check Groupon for super hot deals on lodging, places like the Gatlinburg Rocky Waters Motor Inns have deals for just $32 a night. Check local restaurants and rest areas for savings books as well! We found hundreds of places that had great coupons that helped my family save big! There are plenty of places to visit such as Dollywood, Ripley’s Believe it or Not and Dixie Stampede just to name a few that offer great savings in these coupon books! These are places that are sure to entertain your whole family and since your saving so much on your hotel stay you’ll be able to enjoy more activities and entertainment without breaking the bank!

Take a Road Trip- Air fare can get quite expensive, especially for a larger family. So skip the flight, fill up the tank and hit the road! Road trips are very low cost for the fact that gas is less expensive than multiple plane tickets but it allows you a little more freedom for your destinations. Yes it will take you longer to get there, but find places along the way that you would like to visit to make the most of your trip! You get the flexibility to visit several places, see more and spend less than flying!

Go Camping– Camping is one of my kiddos favorite things to do. We load up the car with our favorite camping gear; tent, sleeping bags, coolers, food, drinks, flashlights, first aid kit and so on! Find a campsite within a hour or so from our home, which on average cost about $25 a night to rent and pitch our tent! We can have a camp fire, tell ghost stories, go hiking, fishing or just enjoy nature! This will be a great experience for your whole family and be extremely easy on your pocket book!

Plan a Stay-cation– This is one of the best ways to save money if that is what you are looking to do this spring vacation! You can spend very little to no money if you want or you can save big on hotel and travel costs by staying home but visit all the great places in your hometown! There are so many places to visit in your own town that you may have never even seen or visited! I have lived in Cincinnati for my entire life and just visited places recently that I had no idea were here! We have several parks that are great to visit such as Eden Park, Sawyer Point, and Winton Woods just to name a few! We also have great places such as The Web Entertainment, Get Air and Newport Aquarium that the whole family will enjoy! Plan a day to take family pictures, host a scavenger hunt or an obstacle course in your backyard! Make the most of your time with your family whether  it is Disney vacation or a backyard camp out, your kiddos will only remember what you did, how much fun you had and the time you spent with them, not how much it cost!

6 Tips to Save on Your Next Vacation

When planning your next vacation, here are a few tips we used last summer to plan our summer vacation to Florida!

  • Skip The Hot Spots- When planning your vacation don’t try and stay directly in the hottest city, look for a hotel or vacation home a few miles out. This will save you big! Hotels in our local city (15 miles away) run $300-$400 a night, hotels near our home are just $80-$100 a night. Yes you will have the convince of being downtown and close to everything, but saving several hundred dollars a night with make up the gas and time you will be spending!
  • Use Your Phone- Calling your hotel or resort may get you a better deal. I know there are a lot of places online that state that they can offer you the best deal and biggest savings, but calling sometimes is best! It will mean a little more work for you but in the long run I have saved several hundred dollars off a house rental by calling around and finding the best deal!
  • Pack Light- If you plan on flying then be sure to keep your baggage in check. Almost all airlines charge per bag and are very limited to size and weight. So over packing an over-sized bag is going to leave you to larger airline ticket fees, killing your travel budget!
  • Keep Your Schedule Flexible- There are many times you can find a great flight or car rental but it is not when you wanted. If you can open your schedule a little when planning your vacation you will be able to save even more. There have been many times that we were able to save more than a $100 by moving our vacation just by 1 or 2 days.
  • Time Your Vacation- When planning your vacation, check for peak times and avoid them. Now through April is a pretty expensive time of year to book vacations for warm weather locations, but with the right timing you may be able to grab a hot discount! Keep an eye on holiday deals and specials and steer clear of March- which typically hosts most schools spring breaks. Most people are not planning a vacation around MLK Day but you may get a deeper discount for it!
  • Look for Discounts with Loyalty Cards, Rewards Programs & Membership Deals- There are so many places that offer special travel savings or discounts such as AAA, warehouse discounts, as well as employer discounts and military deals! Everything and anything that you and your family are a part of call and ask if they offer any discount deals. Some of these can even offer deals on restaurants, attractions as well as your hotel, car rental and other travel arrangements. They may not be huge savings but every little bit counts!

What Are Your Must Haves for Travel? #DownyWrinklePlusHolidayTravel

holiday travel downy wrinkle

downy travel kit2015 has allowed me and my family the opportunities to travel quite often! With all that travel, I quickly caught onto what some of the must haves are for our travel! My family of 6 sometimes needs to be prepared for anything and everything, which normally means more luggage, more clothes, more activities and so on and so on! But one thing I always have is a small bag that pretty much sticks to my side! This is my go to and changes alittle with each trip. But there are a few items that stick in my bag while traveling!

  • Pain Reliever: I do have horrible migraines, so being prepared for them with Advil is a must have. Not to mention 4 girls traveling sometimes, does not always mean getting along when visiting the greatest places on earth!
  • Small Pillow: Some sort of pillow or head rest has it advantages! Whether you are in a car or a plane or train, resting your head for a few minutes can help relieve the stress of travel. So I include a small pillow to help keep me relaxed, comfortable and a blow up one is great for storing in small places.
  • Downy Wrinkle Releaser: With needing to bring a lot of luggage, I tend to try and cram every piece of clothing into one large bag for each member of my family. Which in return can cause our clothes to unpack a little wrinkled. So having Downy Wrinkle Releaser to keep our clothes looking nice with having to tote along the iron on vacation!holiday travel downy wrinkle
  • Deodorant & Perfume: We all need to smell good! It’s just that simple!
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste: And we defiantly all need fresh breathe!
  • Baby Wipes: Even though my girls are no babies any longer, we are always in need of a tissue, sticky hands to be washed or a messy face! So keeping them close is a must have!

So what are your must haves for travel? Do you use some of the same things I do or is your list completely different? Let me know what your must haves are!

I received a travel kit from Downy in exchange for this post. No other compensation was received and as always my opinion is 100% my own!
