Frugal Travel: Make Your Own Crayon Box

Travel Crayon Container

We are heading to Cedar Point this weekend and traveling with 4 kiddos can sometimes be a complete joy, others not so much! So I like to prepare and one thing I do is make things to keep them busy! My girls love to color and make great mater pieces so crayons are a must have in the car.

But your typical crayon box gets demolished in one trip, so I like to find alternatives to keeping our crayons together and not on my van floor! Plus finding new ways to reuse things we would typically throw in the trash, makes us extra happy to recycle!

This is what you will need:

That’s about it! Pretty simple project clean and add crayons! Great item to take with us in the car, at a restaurant or just anytime you need a crayon!!

Newport Aquarium Debuts #KevinBacon King Penguin

DSC_5792

Newport Aquarium treats third graders on field trip to surprise announcement

Third king penguin chick hatched at Aquarium in less than 12 months

NEWPORT, Ky. — Newport Aquarium announced to a group of schoolchildren Tuesday the addition of a baby king penguin that hatched inside the Kroger Penguin Palooza exhibit.

Third-grade students from St. Francis de Sales School in Lebanon, Ohio, went on a field trip to Newport Aquarium and took an “All About Penguins” class ran by the WAVE Foundation’s Manager of Education Programs Dan Dunlap.

At the end of the class, Dunlap revealed to the schoolchildren that a king penguin chick hatched on the afternoon of Feb. 7. Senior biologists Dan Clady and Jen Hazeres were stationed inside the cold-penguin exhibit and displayed the chick for the students to see following the announcement.

The king penguin chick has been affectionately named Kevin Bacon in reference to the renowned actor’s 1980 film “Friday the 13th” – the young bird’s due date.

Bebe (father) and Wednesday (mother) are the biological parents of Kevin Bacon, the second chick the couple has reproduced in the less than a year after a pair of chicks hatched simultaneously May 24, 2014.

Kevin Bacon is the second third-generation king penguin that has hatched at Newport Aquarium. Wednesday was the last king penguin hatched at the aquarium in 2010, before the cold penguin exhibit was renovated and reopened as Kroger Penguin Palooza in March 2011.

KingPenguin_KevinBacon_03

Kevin Bacon initially weighed in at 225 grams and has grown to more than 2.5 pounds (1,188 grams) as of Feb. 24.

Guests can catch a glimpse of the chick inside the Kroger Penguin Palooza while the parents share rearing duties.

Newport Aquarium is one of only 16 institutions in the United States to exhibit king penguins, the second largest species of penguin in the world with adults growing to more than three feet in height.

The successful breeding of three king penguins from one institution over a nearly nine-month span is a rarity. There has been an average of only 14 king penguin hatchings annually over the last 10 years at Association of Zoos and Aquariums institutions in the U.S.

Newport Aquarium has exhibited king penguins since the Northern Kentucky attraction first opened to the public in May 1999, originally exhibiting king penguins acquired from Adventure World near Shirahama, Japan.

Kroger Penguin Palooza features 50 birds that form one of the most diverse collections of penguins in the country. With the addition to Kevin Bacon, there are 13 king penguins in total, as well as chinstrap, gentoo, macaroni and rockhopper penguins. A sixth penguin species, the African penguin, is also on exhibit at Newport Aquarium in The Penguin House.

King penguin facts:

• With their fluffy brown appearance, king penguin chicks look so dissimilar to adult king penguins that early explorers described them as an entirely different species, the woolly penguin.

• King penguins are one of the few birds that do not build nests. Instead, they incubate their eggs under the belly on top of their feet.

• King penguins can be found in the waters of the sub-Antarctic. They breed on many of the sub-Antarctic islands, such as South Georgia, Crozet, the Falklands, and the islands southeast of Australia and southwest of New Zealand.

For more information on Newport Aquarium, visit NewportAquarium.com or call toll free 800-406-FISH (3474).

Got Water? @CastawayBay Does! #BloggingatCP

Phototastic-2015-02-09-17-52-57

Living in Cincinnati, the only thing you can count on, is how unpredictable the weather is here. One day it is 10 degrees and the next 55 degrees, in January! Always keeping us on our toes as to what we need to wear and bring just in case it gets cold! So getting to visit a place that is always 82 degrees, was just what we needed.

Phototastic-2015-02-09-18-05-34

Castaway Bay is near one of our favorite amusement parks, Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio. And is also owned by them as well! With their tropical theme and and their 38,000 square feet of waterpark fun they offer hours and hours of water loving fun!

Castaway Bay features 237 hotel rooms and suites including family-oriented units, fitness center, 6,000-square-foot state-of-the-art arcade, a craft and child activity center, three restaurants, retail shops, adjacent marina and space for meetings, group events and birthday parties.

Crabbie’s Quarterdeck Arcade is a great addition to help keep the kiddos busy when you need to take a break from the waterpark. They feature all your arcade favorites and will keep you busy for hours if needed!

Phototastic-2015-02-09-17-50-45

The rooms at Castaway Bay are more than enough. With 6 of us, we easily fit right into their suites with 2 bunk beds, a king size bed with 1 regular closet with a safe and a over-sized walk in closet! Not to mention the large bathroom and vanity area that allowed us to take showers and get kiddos to brush teeth and hair without creating a long line for bed time tasks!

The view is something that, this weekend was a little covered with ice! But would probably be my favorite part during a summer time visit! The lake was completely covered with ice but there was a great breeze and beautiful scenery from the 2 chairs on our balcony! This would most likely be my quiet place after a long, fun day at Cedar Point! Phototastic-2015-02-18-14-52-40

But if it gets too cold you can always pull up a seat and get nice and warm with the large fireplace in the main lobby near the gift shops! Plus shopping can always make me warm up buying all those souvenirs that I need to take home!

Enjoy a weekend at Castaway Bay with their new “Room, Waterpark and Breakfast Buffet Package” for just $149. Use promo code BLOG at checkout online at Castaway Bay or call 419.627.2106 to make reservations!

While you are there check out more of Cedar Point and their great properties!

This summer will be a great time to visit Sandusky! Not only the fun times you can have at Castaway Bay but there will be some great additions to Cedar Point with a new ride as well as a remodel of the Hotel Breakers. Here are some pictures of what to expect! I will be visiting this summer and will sharing with you what we think and get a insiders view of all the new changes!

Snow Tubing at The Beach?!? @BchMountain

Phototastic-2015-02-07-20-09-34

Snow Tubing at The Beach, The Beach Mountain that is!! The Beach Waterpark-Cincinnati that we have come to grow up with and love so much, has created a way for us to hang out with them in the winter too! Top their 40’ foot high snow tubing hill for a 2 hour session of cold, wet fun! Made with patented SnowMagic LLC technology to create snow using no additives or artificial materials it will seem as if it snowed for weeks!

Phototastic-2015-02-07-20-22-34

The snow tubing hill is great for families of all ages and is well worth your money. In the 2 hours we were there we were able to hit the hill 30+  times. Making the small amount of money you pay to get in a great value! With 6 of us, finding activities to do on a budget and keep them all entertained, is sometimes a hard task. All of my girls ages 6-13 had a great time and wanted to stay longer once our time was up.

The Beach Mountain is open through the end of February. You can check there times and days here.

Phototastic-2015-02-07-18-44-37

Taking your little ones with you is no problem, you have to be 42″ to snow tube on the mountain but if you have a little one that just doesn’t quite make it, don’t worry. There is a play area and smaller tube area that they can still experience the fun!!

Anyone tubing at Beach Mountain must complete and sign the Snow Tubing Release Form.  This form must be signed by a parent/guardian for children under 18.   Please click this simple form to download and bring with you to Beach Mountain.

Tubing is scheduled in 2 hour slots but can be extended for a few dollars more! Be sure to dress in your favorite winter attire! Just because its not real snow doesn’t mean it’s not cold! So grab those hats and gloves and  heavy winter coats!

You don’t want to freeze and wimp out at the mountain! If you get too cold they do have concession open to grab some hot chocolate and sit by one of the many fire pits available!

Phototastic-2015-02-07-19-54-11

You can only have 1 rider per tube and carrying your own tube to the top of the mountain has never been so cool while riding their Handle Tow Rope. This moving walkway is one of my kiddos favorite thing at the mountain besides the tubes of course!

Friends, Food & FUN… That’s What It’s All About at Beach Mountain!

Please Note: Weekend and holiday tubing rates of $25 per person or $20 on all other dates!

Check them out on Twitter here and Facebook here!

I received tickets from The Beach Mountain to visit and write my opinion about our visit. Although I was compensated my opinion is my own.

Sweet Petit Grand Opening #Cincinnati November 11, 2014

10393984_10152594960105914_7801755445341307960_n

Sweet Petit Opening Second Shop Tomorrow

New Vine Street Location Offers Added Visibility to Burgeoning Bakery

CINCINNATI (November 10, 2014) – When Taren Kinebrew opens her second Sweet Petit Desserts shop tomorrow, November 11, at 11 a.m., it will be significant to her on a number of levels – none of which include the mere coincidence of opening on 11/11 at 11. First, it shows how far she’s come since starting Sweet Petit from her home in 2009. It also happens to be Veterans Day, giving the day added meaning for Kinebrew, who spent seven years in the Army National Guard.

“It’s a pretty sweet deal to be able to open the shop on Veterans Day to salute my fellow veterans who have protected our country, and contributed to the freedom we’re afforded here,” said Kinebrew.

As her way of saying thanks, Sweet Petit will offer a few selections to veterans free of charge for Veterans Day.

Sweet Petit’s first storefront, which opened last year at 1426 Race Street, has steadily grown its presence in the OTR neighborhood. However, Kinebrew hopes to attract even more foot traffic at her new shop – located at 1407 Vine Street, across the street from the Paint Building – due in large part to the substantial number of restaurants and resulting activity in the immediate vicinity.

“People are just so familiar with Vine Street, so we felt like it was a smart move to open a second location in an area like that, with more visibility,” Kinebrew said. “We’re one of the first new retail shops north of Washington Park on Race Street, so people from the neighborhood are still discovering us. We’re hoping that with a strong presence on Vine, some of that traffic will flow to our shop on Race, as well.”

Kinebrew will continue to bake all of her tiny, tasty treats in Sweet Petit’s Race Street kitchen. In addition to her standard menu items, which include Cake Pops, Red Velvet Bites and Macaroons, among others, she also plans to offer scones, desserts in a cup and other specialty items at the new shop, which will have slightly longer hours than the Race Street storefront.

The new Vine Street location will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, although Kinebrew may adjust the hours according to demand once open. Visit www.sweetpetitdesserts.com for additional information.

“Purchase of Manhattan” – World Premiere of Concert Opera November 20, 2014

Opera Tells Untold Story of New York’s Hidden Beginning: Could the Island’s Price Tag Really Have Been $24 Worth of Beads?

Performance Continues Historic Partnership between Descendants of Manhattan’s Original Inhabitants and its Dutch Settlers

New York, NY – “Purchase of Manhattan,” a new concert opera that sings to life New York’s hidden beginning, will have its world premiere at the historic Marble Collegiate Church on November 20, 2014. The opera is proudly presented by the Lenape Center, a nonprofit dedicated to continuing the cultural presence of Manhattan’s first inhabitants; the Collegiate Churches of New York, the oldest continuous Protestant congregation in North America; and Collegiate’s multi-faith, global peacemaking initiative, Intersections International.

The groundbreaking opera tells the untold story of how the early Dutch settlers of what was then New Netherland unjustly “purchased” the island of Manhattan from the Lenape people, supposedly for 60 guilders or the modern equivalent of $24. From the perspective of the Lenape, whose culture did not operate on the concept of land ownership, the opera explores the myth of the island’s sale. The project follows a formal, 400-year-old acknowledgement made by the Collegiate Churches of New York, formerly the First Dutch Reform Church, to the Lenape in 2009, recognizing their founders’ role in displacing the native peoples from Manhattan in the 1600s.

“Purchase of Manhattan” is scored by nationally recognized Mohican composer Brent Michael Davids, with a libretto by Abenaki author Joseph Bruchac. Conducted by Sara Jobin, the performance features three solo voices – soprano Alexandra Loutsion, Wampanoag tenor John Bellemer, and baritone Stephen Powell – a full chorus and orchestra, American Indian singers, and Native American flute. The music mingles American Indian and Western European styles in a hybrid mix that unifies both cultures despite their tumultuous past.

November’s opera has grown out of a long Native tradition. In 1913, American Indian woman Zitkala Sa composed the first indigenous opera, “Sun Dance Opera,” and operas written by and about Native Americans have followed. In describing “Purchase of Manhattan” composer Brent Michael Davids’ compositional style, classical music critic Bill Parkercalls Davids, “never glib or facile, but rich in resonance.”

Tickets for the opera can be bought here for $24, a price set to reflect the myth of the Dutch purchase that history books mischaracterize. All proceeds from “Purchase of Manhattan” will go towards the development of a physical Lenape Center in Manhattan for the creation, distribution, and exhibition of Lenape arts and culture, with the purpose of engaging the story of the Lenape peoples within the contemporary fabric of New York City.

“The Lenape Center sees itself as a research platform and a place of action – for native and indigenous artists from around the globe to create new works that critically examine art, history and culture,” said Joe Baker, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Lenape Center.

“Holding the New York City premiere of Purchase of Manhattan at Marble Collegiate Church is historic. Two communities, once separated by culture, race and religion, have worked together to bring this unique performance to New York City residents,” said Rev. Robert Chase, Founding Director of Intersections International. “This unfettered Native American perspective on early interactions between Lenape residents of Manhattan and Dutch settlers helps us all better understand our roots and how we can walk together in pathways of mutual respect and dignity.”

“Native audiences can be proud of their survival and of living culture presented in a contemporary form, and non-Indians can take a fresh look at their own origin myth, the so-called ‘Purchase of Manhattan’,” said Brent Michael Davids, Mohican Composer of the opera.

“We are presenting this opera here at Marble Collegiate Church as part of our yearlong Diversity Series. Using the arts as a medium allows each person who attends to profoundly experience this story, touching the hearts and minds of the audience in ways that mere words could never match, and spurring us to a greater sense of justice as we create the history that generations yet to come will inherit,” said Dr. Michael B. Brown, Senior Minister of Marble Collegiate Church.

“Moving to western Massachusetts five years ago, I thought with gratitude of the Mohican people who had loved and taken care of the land so well for ten thousand years,” said Sara Jobin, Conductor of the opera. “An inquiry into current day Mohican composers brought up Brent Michael Davids’ name right away, and eventually brought us into contact. In the face of global warming and climate change, I am interested in learning more about traditional Native values, and embodying those values in whatever way possible in pursuit of living in harmony with the earth.  May we all walk side by side toward a brighter future together on this beloved planet.”

“I live and grew up on Lenape land in Pennsylvania, the word Lenape is part of my heritage and community,” said Stephen Powell, Baritone Soloist. “I hope to do some service of good through this project and give something back to the original inhabitants of the land I call home.”
