Monday DIY- Make Your Own Watering Can

We keep a large plastic tote in our garage that I have been collecting certain items for us to re-use for various craft projects over the summer. With our kiddos on spring break this week I figured I would go ahead and pull out something and make something fun! With all this gardening that we have been working on, I thought I would make our girls a watering can since they want to help water everything!

To make your own watering can, here is what you need:

  • Laundry Bottle (you can also use a milk jug or if you don’t want a handle, grab a 2 liter or for younger kiddos, use a 20 oz soda bottle)
  • nail
  • hammer

First rinse out your laundry bottle and lid. Grab the lid from the bottle and use the hammer and the nail to make holes in the top of the lid. The more the better seems to work best.

TIP** We did try this with another brand of laundry detergent and had some trouble. The lid had lines in the top and was a thinner plastic. The first whack with the hammer, split the top and made a large crack through the entire top of the lid. The laundry bottles with a flat top and thicker lid, seem to work best. Just thought I would share!

Then you will need to make a few holes in the laundry bottle, near the top. This way the water can flow easily through the holes in the lid. At first we did not add the holes in the laundry bottle and had a very hard time get water to come out. As long as you don’t fill the laundry bottle to the rim you won’t have to worry about it leaking from these holes.

Once you get all your holes in the laundry bottle you will have a fun watering can for the kiddos that cost you…….. absolutely nothing! These are my favorite kind of FREE!

I love finding new ways to use items that we would normally just throw in the recycling bin! What items have you re-purposed?

Kids Frugal Fun- Nature Art

Each week Mom On Dealz brings us a craft that is fun, educational, and frugal.

Each week Mom On Dealz bring us a kids craft that is fun, educational, and frugal.

If you enjoy this share them on Pinterest!

The first day of Spring was 3/20 so I thought it was a perfect excuse to go on a nature walk with my son.  While walking we searched for “treasures” that we could use to create pictures.

Nature Art

Materials:
Cardstock
Mod Podge
Sticks, Rocks, Flowers, Grass, other Nature Items

Directions:
1. Take a walk with your child and look for items in nature that could be used to create art. Help your child identify certain things and which are appropriate to take as a “treasure”.

2.  Cover a sheet of card-stock with Mod Podge (or glue).

3.  Allow your child to create words or pictures by laying the “treasures” on the glue.  Be sure to have your child ID characteristics of the items while you work (color, shape, size, texture).

Educational Activities:

  • Language Arts-1.  Have your child spell words or names with the nature items.  2.  Create a nature book with your child.  Put one item on each sheet of paper and label the item and have your child write the name of each item.
  • Science-This craft lends itself to just about every single Standard of Learning there is for Kindergarten students.  1. Have your child describe items both verbally and pictorially by telling you about them and then drawing pictures in a journal when you get back home. Be sure to have them ID colors, shapes, and sizes of the items.  2.  ID the changes in the environment that are happening due to the season change.  3.  Play around with larger items by creating shadows with them.
  • Math-When you get home you can have your child measure each object or line all the objects up and measure the complete line.  You can group objects by size and count how many are in each size group.

Ideas for Easter Baskets Items

With Easter right around the corner, I have been stocking up on items to add to our girls Easter Baskets! If you are like me, buying pre-made baskets seem like a waste of money for 2 reasons! It is usually cheap junk, that lasts a whole week and they are usually pretty pricey for the small amount of items you get.

Although the picture above is a super cute basket, $38 is a little too much to spend on 1 basket, multiply this by 3 (we have 3 girls) and we have spent way too much!! Plus now we have added 2 puppy babies to our house and our girls are asking if the Easter Bunny will be bringing the puppies anything! Yikes, I need a part time job just to be able to afford Easter gifts!! Although they still know the true meaning of Easter it’s just like Christmas, they want fun stuff to play with!

I like to find things that I know my girls will enjoy and use for a while and are within our budget! Here is a list of items that we have put in our kiddos Easter Baskets over the years!

Items from your stockpile:

  • Crayons- we have some left over from the back to school deals
  • Gum- older kiddos would love this!
  • FREE Candy- CVS is always running sales on candy, so we have  a whole drawer of items we can add to our girls baskets
  • Clothes- I have a tote full of clothes that I have found on clearance at Target, Old Navy or Justice that I have held onto for either Birthday’s, Easter or Valentine’s Day.
  • Markers
  • Glue Sticks
  • Rulers

Dollar Store Ideas:

  • Bubbles
  • Puzzles
  • Jump Ropes

Amazon Ideas:

Book Ideas:

Homemade Ideas:

  • Make up some Bath Paint with Shaving Cream
  • Grab some super cheap Flip Flops from a local craft store or dollar store and decorate them. Add glitter, gems, bows, whatever you think your little one would like.
  • Make a batch of Edible Play-doh and put them in cute jars. Tie a few cookie cutters to the jars and a mini rolling pin for the dollar store!

Other Ideas:

  • Personalize a T-shirt- there are many places you can create a one of a kind t-shirt just for your kiddos! Vistaprint has one for just $2!
  • Sand Box Toys & Accessories
  • Hula Hoops
  • Nail Polish or Girl Accessories (lip gloss, chapstick, etc)

Frugal Goodie Bag Idea- Decorate Your Own Bookmark

Finding inexpensive goodie bag items for your kiddos class can sometimes be very challenging at times.  It seems with 3 kiddos in school and several class parties, we are always buying items for the girls classes! So after searching the dollar store this weekend, I was able to find these cute decorate your own bookmarks, 36ct for just a $1 and a box of 24ct crayons at Walmart for .47. I now had a great item to add to their class goodie bags, on the cheap!!

With just a $1.47 invested I was able to make 24 of these super cute decorate your own bookmarks! Add a crayon or 2 to the back of the bookmark with a rolled up piece of tape! I only did 1 crayon, you could add another crayon so that they could have 2, but I figured what pre-schooler didn’t have more crayons at home!

Frugal Goodie Bag Idea- Valentine’s Day Smore’s Kit

If you are looking for a quick and inexpensive Valentine’s Day idea for your kiddos class, then you are in luck? We made these over the weekend with items that we had already in the pantry so it was very inexpensive for us, but even if you need to purchase them, this should cost no more than $5 to make about 20 or so.

We used:

  • a Box of Graham Crackers
  • 2 Hershey Bars
  • 1 Bag of Heart Shaped Marshmallows
  • Zip Lock Baggies
  • a Couple sheets of Pink Scrapbook Paper
  • Stapler
  • Computer or a marker to hand write the Valentine’s Note

Very simple, just add 2 pieces of graham cracker, 1 piece of chocolate and 1 marshmallow to each bag. We then printed out a little message along the top of some scrapbook paper and cut to size. We also added instructions on the back, just in case! Stapled the note to the top and that’s it. Took us about 30 minutes to make 20!

Instructions for the back were pretty simple:

Add 1 piece of chocolate and the marshmallow to the top of one piece of graham cracker. Pop in microwave on a plate for just a few seconds. Add other piece of graham cracker and squish together! YUMMY! Happy Valentine’s Day!
