Spring is finally here! I know not officially but with this week hitting the 70’s all week, it sure feels like spring to me! We already have several flowers blooming and ready to decorate our flower beds.

I can’t wait to start seeing some progress with our veggies and fruits! Starting next week I will post more about our garden, but I thought since there wasn’t much to show, I would share my pretty blooms!

Frugal Gardening- Save Your Hosta Seeds

Even though Fall just started, there are many projects you can do for your garden and landscaping now. One thing that we do each year is collect our Hosta Seeds to plant for the next year. This is a quick and easy way to produce beautiful landscaping without costing us a dime! Here are a few tips to help you, if you would like to collect and re-produce your own Hostas Plants!

First you will notice your current Hostas producing seed pods normally in September. Don’t grab them just yet, wait until these seed pods become brown and dry looking. But to warn you, these will turn brown pretty quickly, so keep an eye on them.  I have heard of people putting a pair of pantyhose or brown bag (tied gently around the stem) around the top of the plant to catch the seeds, if the pod would happen to open and start dropping their seeds.

Once the seeds are ripe and ready to be picked, you can then separate the pod from the black seeds. Timing is everything! You don’t want to pick them to early and the seeds are not ripe, you will them be left without any plants for next year!  Mature & viable seeds will be a dark brown or black. If  you see any other color seeds in the pod, you can throw them away, they are not fertile and will not produce any plants.

You will want to store your seeds in a dark, cool place- I throw them in our deep freezer in the garage in dark colored canister. You can store them in the refrigerator or a place in your basement- some where cool- you do not have to refrigerate or freeze them. You do not want to store them somewhere where they will be in direct light.

One last tip! Even though it is fairly easy to grow Hostas from seeds, you do need to keep them watered and they will need plenty of lighting to grow into mature Hostas plants. We start our seeds in January and plant them in the ground by the end of May, early June. Within a few years your new Hostas will start producing their own seed pods and you can continue to re-produce more and more Hostas!

Oh, How My Garden Grows- 7/19 (link up)

Our tomato plants are just going crazy! We are picking on average 10 cherry tomatoes each day. There are several larger tomatoes that are very close for pickin, but the cherry tomatoes are just producing like crazy! Peppers and Jalapenos are pretty close as well!

If I could keep the squirrels off the strawberries we could actually have a few, but this is about as big as they get and then they are gone!!

Raspberries are still doing great but no berries yet! I can’t wait to finally have some produce that I want to eat!!

Beans are looking great! I will be adding the string fence for them to climb up later this week!

Bell peppers are getting bigger and bigger everyday! Some of the Purple Beauty Bell Peppers are starting to turn purple and look great!

Oh How My Garden Grows- 7/5 (link up)

So we got a very late start on our garden this year. But with the weather changing it’s mind everyday if it was going to be hot, cold, wet, dry, windy and so on, I just did not want to plant our veggies and fruit and then have nothing from the crazy weather. But I am glad we waited because everything is growing very well and we have had tons of tomatoes and peppers, more than we can eat right now!! So you can see above how one of our cherry tomato plants is doing very well. Our girls are picking 5-10 tomatoes every other day.

Here are my bell peppers! They are doing very well also. We have about 4 that almost ready to pick but this little guy was so cute, I wanted to share him instead of the big guys!!

Here are some of our hot peppers, we have been picking a few of these guys about every 3 days. I am very impressed this year with the garden. We have already save close to $50 in produce so far. Considering my girls eat tomatoes like candy, I am very glad that our plants are producing enough to keep up with them!!
