Newport Aquarium: Confirms 2 Female Shark Rays are Pregnant!

Newport Aquarium Sunshine Ultrasound Image 2015

Newport Aquarium confirms its two female shark rays are pregnant

First 3 cases of shark ray breeding under professional care have occurred at Newport Aquarium

NEWPORT, Ky. — Newport Aquarium announced Wednesday its two female shark rays, Sweet Pea and Sunshine, are both pregnant – the second and third documented cases of shark ray breeding under professional animal care in the world.

“This is an exciting next step in realizing the goals of our Shark Ray Breeding Program,” said Eric Rose, executive director at Newport Aquarium. “Still, pregnancy is not without risk, so we are cautiously optimistic that both Sweet Pea and Sunshine will give birth to healthy shark ray pups.  Newport Aquarium is dedicated to the conservation of these threatened animals and we remain committed to sharing the shark rays’ story of survival.”

Newport Aquarium animal husbandry staff confirmed the pregnancies after performing ultrasounds for Sweet Pea on Oct. 1 and Sunshine on Oct. 8. Newport Aquarium veterinarian Dr. Peter Hill, who conducted the ultrasounds, estimates Sweet Pea and Sunshine’s due dates are within two to three months, with Sweet Pea expected to deliver first. The equipment used to conduct the ultrasounds was on loan from the FETCH-LAB at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Allied Health Sciences.

Shark rays are a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, one level from endangered. Threats to shark rays include habitat destruction, pollution, overfishing and the use of their fins for products, including shark fin soup.Newport Aquarium Sunshine Ultrasound 2015

“With the world’s shark ray population depleting at a faster rate than it’s being replaced, the Shark Ray Breeding Program is important because it helps us better understand the life cycle of shark rays and closely related species,” said Ric Urban, chief conservation officer at Newport Aquarium. “The knowledge gained from this program will be valuable information for the sustainability of shark ray populations in the wild.”

The public can still see Sweet Pea and Sunshine in the Surrounded by Sharks exhibit now through a to-be-determined time closer to their due dates, at which point they will be moved to Newport Aquarium’s offsite animal health facility in Northern Kentucky.

Newport Aquarium established the world’s first Shark Ray Breeding Program on Feb. 14, 2007, when a male shark ray named Scooter was introduced to the 385,000-gallon Surrounded by Sharks exhibit. The breeding program expanded in winter 2013 when Sunshine moved from the Coral Reef tunnel to Surrounded by Sharks and a second male shark ray named Spike also was introduced to the Aquarium’s signature exhibit.

Nearly seven years after Newport Aquarium established the Shark Ray Breeding Program, Sweet Pea became the first shark ray to give birth while under professional animal care on Jan. 24, 2014.

For more information on Newport Aquarium, visit NewportAquarium.com or call toll free 800-406-FISH (3474). Connect with Newport Aquarium on Facebook and Twitter, or subscribe to its blog, for the most up-to-date news regarding the shark ray pregnancies.

Bring Wild West to Life

Looking for a boot scootin’ good time this fall? Look now further than the Old West Festival in Williamsburg, Ohio! Celebrating their 8th year of live music, action packed performances, amazing food and fun rides to keep the whole family entertained!

The western-themed festival rolls back in town for another season of boot stompin’ family fun on Saturdays and Sundays – September 12 through October 18, 2015. Located at its permanent site, just 15 minutes from I-275, east of Cincinnati, the Old West Festival transports visitors back in time to a historic American era, the Wild West.

Drawing more than 20,000 visitors each fall, the permanent old west town is home to everything you would expect to see in Dodge City circa 1878. Attendees will enjoy historically accurate medicine and saloon shows, can-can dancers, gunfights, jailbreaks, and more. Period re-enactors will also be found walking the streets and performing the roles of cowboys, cowgirls, store owners, residents, and of course, outlaws.

Rope RiderOther performers will be ‘round town as well. Magician Jason Jacobs will amaze, bewilder and astonish with his magical flare and the Pickled Brothers will shock with their mind-boggling performances. Trick rider Abigail Petersen will impress audiences with her horsemanship and daring stunts, while visitors to the Long Branch Saloon will enjoy shows by world champion roper Rider Keisner, and folks will no doubt get a “kick” out of Miss Melody Star and her Hurdy Gurdy Dancing Girls.

And what would the old west be without a good ole’ fashioned gunfight? Back by popular demand, four times daily starting at high noon, the Big Irons Rangers return with their gunfight re-enactments and trick shooting. In between shows they, and other period interpreters, will be walking the grounds to meet visitors and pose for photos.

They can also enjoy old-timey puppet and magic shows, storytelling and sing-a-longs. The youngsters can also participate in historic games, and even cross the frontier in a covered wagon.

Abigail Old West FestivalThemed weekends add to the experience of the Old West Festival and include Western Film Weekend (New this year) Sept. 12-13; Romance Weekend Sept. 19-20; America’s Pastime Weekend Sept. 26-27; Steampunk Weekend Oct. 3-4; OctoBEERfest Weekend (New this year, in partnership with Rhinegeist) Oct. 10-11; and Halloween Weekend Oct. 17-18.

Iconic scenes of cowboys riding into the sunset, saloon brawls and gunfights have shaped our idea of the Wild West. Guests will enjoy screenings from classic movies, experience a lively panel discussion and meet the cast and crew from Revelation Trail, a western film shot on the grounds of the Old West Festival.

Liberty Township: Paint & Sip Studio Opens- Pinot Palette

photo 5(3)

Pinot ’s Palette to donated all painting proceeds from their grand opening event  to the Cincinnati Children’ s Hospital

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OHIO (opened April 20, 2015) — The doors to fun and creativity opened with the newest paint-and-sip studio Pinot’s Palette at 7302 Yankee Road in Liberty Township.

Fans of art and wine can enjoy the best of both worlds at the upscale entertainment destination where guests can “Paint, drink and have fun.” The studio will host its grand opening celebration to the public from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.
It’s all a dream come true for Dayton native Kelly Daniels who has always wanted to own her own business. Daniels visited a Pinot’s Palette studio in Dayton owned by Karen Doggett, a friend of the family for nearly 20 years. Daniels was so inspired by the business that she had to open one of her own.

“I couldn’t wait to bring Butler County a new kind of entertainment where everyone can take home their very own painted masterpiece,” Daniels said. “Pinot’s Palette helps people get their creative juices flowing.”

Daniels said Doggett inspired her to be the boss of her own Pinot’s Palette and bring the fun to Liberty Township. And she recruited childhood friend and Army veteran, Pam Imel, to join her as the studio manager.

“Kelly has dreamt of starting her own business for a long time, and it’s an unbelievable feeling to be able to help your best friend bring her dream to reality,” Imel said. “We are so excited for our grand opening, and bringing the community a place to paint, drink, and have fun. We are also thrilled to be partnering with the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital since the organization is important to Liberty Township.”

Pinot’s Palette of Liberty Township will donate all seat reservation proceeds from the grand opening celebration to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s fundraising program, Giving Hope.

“Giving Hope events are a fun way to support the medical center. Every gift, no matter the size, has an impact on the kids and families we serve,” said Megan Boesing, donor relations officer of Giving Hope. “As a nonprofit organization, Cincinnati Children’s relies on the support of our friends and partners in the community, like Pinot’s Palette, to help us advance research and improve care. Together, we are helping to change the outcome for kids here in Cincinnati and around the world.”
Pinot’s Palette of Liberty Township provides the art supplies needed for the event.  Guests can register online to attend two-to-three-hour painting classes where they recreate the featured painting of the night, guided by a local artist.

Public events are held in a roomy main studio that seats up to 48 people. A private party room for 15 people is also available for events. An in-studio bar offers beer, wine and spirits for sale. The studio is approximately 2800 sq. ft.
More information is available at https://www.pinotspalette.com/libertytownship.

Cincinnati is loving the bands and completely enjoying the music, drinks and socializing- Just check out Instagram and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I thought I would give you a few tips if you are planning on attending today or tomorrow that may make your visit a little better! matt and kim bunbury music festval 2015

Bring a Few Things:
You will need your Driver’s License or State Id so have it with you. If you are a bringing a bag, they will check it so open it up and show them what’s inside. No weapons, coolers, food, pets, and so on are not permitted. To see the complete list, check here! It will be hot, there will be sun, there maybe rain, it will be crowded and loud! So a few things you may want to bring are things like sunblock, sunglasses or a hat, a blanket, poncho or umbrella, bug spray, ear plugs, hand sanitizer (bathrooms will be crowded and port a potties will run out of it) and your camera (no professional type cameras will be permitted). You can also bring a bottle of water with you, don’t throw it away when your done, there are water fountains and you can refill your bottle all day. You are not permitted to bring food or other drinks, so water bottles are great!

Entering the Venue:
The lines yesterday were wrapped around many, many blocks of downtown Cincinnati. But with that being said, the lines moved very quickly. The biggest hold up is the people that did not have their tickets readily available and some time to put bracelets on each and every guest walking in the venue! The staff was very friendly and patient but have your ticket ready, this will help keep the line moving and less time missing out on the music! They have also opened additional entrances to allow for a quicker entrance into the venue- Pete Rose Way at the end of Eggleston Ave by the entrance at Sawyer Point, at Butler as well as Public Landing by Yeatman’s Cove.

Bring Cash:
If you plan on eating or drinking while you are there, you will need cash to pay! There are ATM’s on site, but I have to tell you, I don’t think anyone either remember to bring cash or just didn’t bring enough, the lines for the ATM where always very long! So stop and grab plenty of cash before you come to help save time  and suffering of standing in line.

bunbury music 2015Parking:
Parking is available everywhere downtown, but can get pretty pricey! I paid $10 to park but walked about 4 blocks to get to the venue. The lots directly near the festival were $25 per vehicle to park. So have cash or try out Uber-the official safe ride of Bunbury! Use promo code BUNWEB15 for up to $20 off your FIRST ride. You can sign up here! You can also take a bike on the Cincinnati Bike Rental at Wheel Fun Rentals starting at $8 a day.

Bathrooms:
There are several bathrooms and port a potties but the lines are pretty long, so be prepared and just bring a friend to stand in line with to pass the time! Here’s the map in case you need to find beverages & bathrooms! → http://bit.ly/1Q4l6tD
I received tickets to attend Bunbury Music Festival in exchange for a honest review. No other compensation was received and as always my opinion is 100% my own.
