Cincinnati: DAAP Grad’s Unique New Retail Shop Grand Opening May 2015

Something Bazaar Coming to OTR

DAAP Grad’s Unique New Retail Shop Open

CINCINNATI (Thursday, May 7, 2015) – When Ericka Leighton-Spradlin graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), she and many of her peers faced a similar problem – losing access to the endless resources and facilities DAAP has to offer, and struggling to raise the funding necessary to support their artistic endeavors. Although there were traditional galleries and mainstream retail opportunities available to sell their work, there was really nothing in between.

In the years following graduation, she came across many other talented artists and designers battling the same issue of having to seek out and rent studio space or other facilities to aid their passions. And, when she couldn’t find a simple solution to the problem, she took matters into her own hands. What has resulted is her new shop, Continuum, which officially opens tomorrow at Noon.

“Many artists, in addition to their personal projects have creative side projects that don’t quite fit in the mainstream retail market, and that’s where Continuum comes in – to support artists, designers, and makers in any of their artistic endeavors, and to provide a curated retail experience to showcase their goods,” Leighton-Spradlin said.

By exposing the artists to a market that might not be reached in a traditional gallery setting, she hopes to assist them in generating the funds needed to support their studio practices.

The UC alum doesn’t classify her new store – located at 1407 Vine Street – as a boutique, but rather a “bazaar,” since it features everything from women’s clothing and shoes to “eclectic oddities and wares,” as the owner/artist puts it (think ceramic pots, towels and sheets, and home décor). But, more important to Leighton-Spradlin than what she sells is who she sells it for, and who buys it.

“My goal is to support independent makers, artists and designers, and to allow them to share their vision with the customer,” she said. “I want to establish a relationship between the artists and the customer, and give shoppers an immersive experience.”

As part of that experience, she eventually plans to feature the artists being showcased in her store on her website, complete with bios, backgrounds and even an e-commerce component.

For now, her sole focus is giving individual artists and smaller collectives – including current DAAP students and soon-to-be graduates – an opportunity to showcase their work in a curated retail environment, while providing the possibility of a more personal connection to their customers.

Part of that connection, Leighton-Spradlin believes, comes from community, craftsmanship and passion, all of which the Cincinnati native has seen thriving in OTR over the years. So, she contacted 3CDC in search of a space for her new shop, and learned that the organization had an ideal location to lease her – an 833-square-foot space in the Parvis Building on Vine Street.

“Since my first year of college (2007), I just loved the OTR area and architecture,” Leighton-Spradlin said. “Seeing the renaissance of the neighborhood, I was not only attracted to the aesthetics but also the community, and I wanted to be a part of that.”  Starting tomorrow, she officially will be.

Cross If You Dare- Newport Aquarium Shark Bridge

newport shark walk 3

World’s first and only Shark Bridge opens Thursday at Newport Aquarium

North America’s largest group of scalloped hammerhead sharks now on exhibit

NEWPORT, Ky. — Newport Aquarium’s all-new Shark Bridge – the only rope suspension bridge in North America where guests can walk just inches above nearly two dozen sharks – is scheduled to open to the public 10 a.m. Thursday, April 30.

The Shark Bridge is a 75-foot-long, V-shaped rope bridge suspended over the open waters of the Surrounded by Sharks exhibit’s 385,000-gallon tank. Should guests dare to cross, the Shark Bridge offers the thrill of walking closely atop sharks, shark rays, stingrays and hundreds of fish from an unrivalled vantage point.

“For our thrill-seeking guests who dare to cross, Shark Bridge is a breathtaking way to experience sharks like never before,” said Eric Rose, executive director at Newport Aquarium. “It’s an adventure that you can only get at Newport Aquarium.”

A family-friendly attraction, Shark Bridge is included with admission to Newport Aquarium.

Commemorating the opening of the Shark Bridge, Newport Aquarium has added extremely rare scalloped hammerhead sharks into the Surrounded by Sharks exhibit.

newport shark walk

After the scalloped hammerheads went into the Surrounded by Sharks exhibit April 27-29, Newport Aquarium now has the largest collection of scalloped hammerhead sharks on display in North America, as well as one of the largest in the world.

Each of Newport Aquarium’s scalloped hammerhead sharks were born in 2014 during the months of June and July near Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii, one of the most the most stable breeding grounds for the endangered species. Over time, these juveniles will triple in size as adult scalloped hammerhead sharks can grow up to 14 feet in length and more than 300 pounds.

“There are less than 20 institutions in the world with scalloped hammerhead sharks on exhibit,” said Chris Pierson, Newport Aquarium operations director. “Newport Aquarium is proud to be the only place in the Midwest that exhibits such a magnificent species of shark, and we are committed to educating our community about the importance of protecting this endangered species.”

Guests who pass through the Surrounded by Sharks exhibit can learn about the scalloped hammerhead conservation organizations the WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium is supporting – the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii and the Costa Rica-based nonprofit Misión Tiburón.

In June 2014, scalloped hammerheads became the first species of shark protected by the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

For more information on Newport Aquarium, visit NewportAquarium.com or call toll free 800-406-FISH (3474). To learn more about the WAVE Foundation, visit wavefoundation.org.

Shark Bridge Facts

It took approximately 788 hours of labor to fabricate, build and install the Shark Bridge … More than 4 miles (approximately 21,750 feet) of rope were used to construct the Shark Bridge … Approximately 1.5 tons (3,460 pounds) of steel were used to construct the Shark Bridge … The addition of the Shark Bridge has tripled the viewing area that surrounds the shark tank for guests prior to exiting Newport Aquarium’s exhibits area … Cincinnati-based GBBN Architects and THP Limited Inc. designed and engineered the Shark Bridge, with construction beginning in February and concluding in mid-April … International Cordage Inc. out of Phoenix, Ariz. produced and installed the Shark Bridge.

Shark Research Group, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, University of Hawaii

Headquartered at the University of Hawaii’s Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, the SRG’s goal is to gain a better understanding of the activities of adult scalloped hammerhead sharks in order to learn more about how to protect the species. The SRG is using satellite tags to record the distance traveled by female adult scalloped hammerheads that give birth at Kaneohe Bay, as well as studying behavior patterns of male scalloped hammerheads to learn their motivations for visiting the area.

Misión Tiburón, Costa Rica

While the scalloped hammerhead population near Hawaii is sustainable, most other distinct population segments around the world are at endangered levels, primarily due to overfishing. Such is the case near Costa Rica, where the nonprofit organization Misión Tiburón is leading efforts to educate the public about scalloped hammerhead’s threats, their nursery areas and how to keep them protected. Misión Tiburón believes harmful acts like finning will decrease when locals take pride in nearby marine life through education and awareness.

Newport Aquarium, voted the No. 1 aquarium in the country by USA Today’s 10Best.com in 2012, has showcased thousands of animals from around the world in a million gallons of water since 1999. What a Boxing Good Time! Battle of the Badge 2015

Battle of the Badge 2015

Last Friday I got the opportunity to check out the Battle of the Badge which by the way was my first Boxing Event, so I was a little Holiday for Herosnervous as what to expect. The Battle of the Badge, featuring our police and firefighters in a sanctioned boxing event with participants currently from Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.

Battle of the Badge is a boxing event hosted by Holiday for Heros (also known as 4th For Our Soldiers) to raise funds for families of First Responders that have lost their lives in the line of duty. The foundation has been running for 10 years and helped so many families. So getting the opportunity to check it out and help raise money for a great cause, I couldn’t pass it up!

It is their mission to provide scholarships and grants to deserving families for their sacrifice to us all. It is also their mission through their unique events to thank and recognize our Military, First Responders and their families for their Courage, Dedication and Sacrifice to our communities and this Great Country.

Battle of the badge No Empty Seats 2015

There wasn’t a empty seat in the house! Friends and family of each and every boxer was there to not only support their fighter but to help raise money for a great cause! If you came late, you were standing for the 3 hour event!

Battle of the Badge 2015

The boxing event started and the punches got a throwing! It was absolutely crazy to watch firefighters and police hit each other, but they definitely were enjoying themselves and sportsmanship was a part of each and every fight!

Battle of the Badge Getting ready 2015Battle of the Badge Boxing Time 2015

Each and every fight was fun to watch and kept us on our toes. Not knowing which punch was going to land on the other boxer, who would be standing afterwards or will someone get knocked out! There were several fights that were just amazing to watch the ability that some of these men and women have. Boxing is not an easy sport and takes training and talent, they definitely had it!

Battle of the Badge Gir Fight 2015

The girl fights were quite interesting and the scariest for me. I have never really watched girls fight before so I cringed with every punch! But they were amazing and show great talent!

Battle of the Badge Fights 2015

Punch after punch and 16 fights later the fights started to come to an end!

Battle of the Badge Winners 2015

All of the winners received a belt and a fireworks show in the background! It definitely would make anyone feel like a winner!

Cincinnati: Bravo Grand Opening in Rookwood

bravo pic

Italian food is my absolute favorite food – so getting the opportunity to try out the new location of Bravo! Cucina Italiana in Rookwood (Cincinnati) was like, duh! Bravo! is know for their higher end Italian cuisine at affordable prices but I have to say the experience was my favorite! Walking into the restaurant, smells of your favorite Italian spices and flavors hit you, instantly making your mouth water. Walking to our table getting a preview of all the amazing food, seemed almost like a tease!

bread and salad bravo

As soon as we arrived to our table our waiter greeted us and asked if we had ever visited a Bravo! and in detail explained what specials they had. Gave us plenty of options and answered all our questions about the food and what each item contained. The detail to customer service and making our visit the best it could be, was a amazing! We got to start off our meal with a Caesar salad and bread. Then we got our yummy appetizers!

bravo appetizers

I normally am not a huge fan of flatbread, but the Chicken, Spinach & Bacon Flatbread with Grilled chicken, spinach, Applewood bacon, green onions, Mozzarella, and Provolone was absolutely delicious! The flavors blended so well together and are a great way to get started!

I was a little afraid of trying the Italian Wedding Soup. Meatballs, spinach, pasta and cheese just did not seem like something that would go together. So I was a little on the fence. But I have to say, this was the most delicious bowl of soup I have ever had! Extremely creamy and the meatballs, oh meatballs! These meatballs were moist and flavorful in each and every bit! This is a meal all in it’s own!

After this, there was not much more room for anything else, but I knew we had some more great food coming and a dessert!

I ordered the Sausage Tortelloni which is a Cheese-filled tortelloni, sweet Italian sausage, pancetta, tomato sauce, crushed red pepper, Mozzarella, and fresh basil. And my partner ordered the Mama’s Lasagna Bolognese a Creamy Alfredo and BRAVO!’s signature meat sauce. With out a doubt these two meals were absolutely to die for! The moist, sweet flavor of the Italian sausage and the creamy cheese and kicking peppers were blended so well and just melted in your mouth! But the lasagna, it was my favorite! The flavors of this lasagna were just amazing! It was not your regular lasagna, this was creamy and flavors just burst in your mouth! The way they blend the Alfredo sauce and cheeses are such a great combination, it made the meal fantastic!

bravo dinner

Finally when I just felt like I couldn’t eat another bite, they delivered the dessert! And just not any dessert, Bravo! Cheesecake- Luscious New York style cheesecake with a shortbread cookie crust, dusted with sugar and caramelized to order. Served with vanilla bean anglaise.

Like who comes up with this stuff! I love cheesecake, but this was like over the top, the best cheesecake I have ever had! As you can see in the picture we finished the entire thing! I know what your thinking, how in the world did you eat all that food, well when it’s that good you just can’t not eat it!!

Bravo cheesecake

So next time you have a hunger for Italian food, the only place to go is Bravo!. Check them out here on their website to make reservations or you are able to walk in, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram!

The elephants are my favorite part of the circus. They are such beautiful animals and are able to do such amazing things! Knowing that they are able to listen and follow up to 60 commands proves just how smart they are! There are nine leading elephant ladies of Ringling Bros. Presents Legends which are made up of Karen, Nichole, Bonnie, Juliette, Sara, Kelly Ann, Rudy, Sundara & April.

In the All Access Pre-Show- Asia, the artistic elephant, creates a painting that a lucky audience member will take home!

Did you know?

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation is located on 200 acres of pristine wilderness in central Florida, between Tampa and Orlando.

The facilities are sensitive to the environment and utilize good drainage and water-saving devices. No trees were felled and no wetlands disturbed to build the CEC. The unspoiled site is also home to egrets, raccoons, snakes, wild turkeys, and many other native species. The Center for Elephant Conservation meets or exceeds all environmental requirements and regulations for housing elephants.

There are five outside paddock areas, all of which include structures to provide shade and constant access to drinking water. With an intricate system of 37 gates and walkways, each paddock can be accessed from any other one without animals having to exit secured areas.

Do you see that there are 8 riders in this ball? We were amazed to see that they had 5 riders, then they add more, and more and then they add 8 and my girls flipped out! They could not believe they could get that many riders in there and not crash into each other! It takes amazing skill to be able to accomplish this!

Alexander Lacey has a strong and unique bond with his majestic big cats. They may look scary and seem dangerous, but you can tell very quickly that Alexander Lacey has a great relationship with the lions and tigers! They respect him and he does the same to them. They seem to love putting on a show and showing off their beautiful coats!

Johnathan Lee Iverson – The Ringmaster for Ringling Bros. Presents LEGENDS, began performing at the age of nine with the world-famous Boys Choir of Harlem! He is the first African American and the youngest ringmaster in circus history! Johnathan absolutely makes the show and ties each and every act together to make for a very entertaining show! He is the beginning and the end of the show and absolutely amazing!

Newport Aquarium Debuts #KevinBacon King Penguin

Newport Aquarium treats third graders on field trip to surprise announcement

Third king penguin chick hatched at Aquarium in less than 12 months

NEWPORT, Ky. — Newport Aquarium announced to a group of schoolchildren Tuesday the addition of a baby king penguin that hatched inside the Kroger Penguin Palooza exhibit.

Third-grade students from St. Francis de Sales School in Lebanon, Ohio, went on a field trip to Newport Aquarium and took an “All About Penguins” class ran by the WAVE Foundation’s Manager of Education Programs Dan Dunlap.

At the end of the class, Dunlap revealed to the schoolchildren that a king penguin chick hatched on the afternoon of Feb. 7. Senior biologists Dan Clady and Jen Hazeres were stationed inside the cold-penguin exhibit and displayed the chick for the students to see following the announcement.

The king penguin chick has been affectionately named Kevin Bacon in reference to the renowned actor’s 1980 film “Friday the 13th” – the young bird’s due date.

Bebe (father) and Wednesday (mother) are the biological parents of Kevin Bacon, the second chick the couple has reproduced in the less than a year after a pair of chicks hatched simultaneously May 24, 2014.

Kevin Bacon is the second third-generation king penguin that has hatched at Newport Aquarium. Wednesday was the last king penguin hatched at the aquarium in 2010, before the cold penguin exhibit was renovated and reopened as Kroger Penguin Palooza in March 2011.

Kevin Bacon initially weighed in at 225 grams and has grown to more than 2.5 pounds (1,188 grams) as of Feb. 24.

Guests can catch a glimpse of the chick inside the Kroger Penguin Palooza while the parents share rearing duties.

Newport Aquarium is one of only 16 institutions in the United States to exhibit king penguins, the second largest species of penguin in the world with adults growing to more than three feet in height.

The successful breeding of three king penguins from one institution over a nearly nine-month span is a rarity. There has been an average of only 14 king penguin hatchings annually over the last 10 years at Association of Zoos and Aquariums institutions in the U.S.

Newport Aquarium has exhibited king penguins since the Northern Kentucky attraction first opened to the public in May 1999, originally exhibiting king penguins acquired from Adventure World near Shirahama, Japan.

Kroger Penguin Palooza features 50 birds that form one of the most diverse collections of penguins in the country. With the addition to Kevin Bacon, there are 13 king penguins in total, as well as chinstrap, gentoo, macaroni and rockhopper penguins. A sixth penguin species, the African penguin, is also on exhibit at Newport Aquarium in The Penguin House.

King penguin facts:

• With their fluffy brown appearance, king penguin chicks look so dissimilar to adult king penguins that early explorers described them as an entirely different species, the woolly penguin.

• King penguins are one of the few birds that do not build nests. Instead, they incubate their eggs under the belly on top of their feet.

• King penguins can be found in the waters of the sub-Antarctic. They breed on many of the sub-Antarctic islands, such as South Georgia, Crozet, the Falklands, and the islands southeast of Australia and southwest of New Zealand.
