Make a Difference In Your Community #GivingBackPacks

Giving Back Packs

Now that summer is almost officially over and most of the kiddos are back in school, it’s time to finish purchasing all those school supplies your kiddos need to make the start of their school year a great one! With coupons and sales I spend about $40 on school supplies and backpacks per each child, but the average most parents spend is $100 per child! When buying supplies for 4 kiddos this adds up very quickly, plus buying clothes, shoes, getting new hair cuts, etc you can quickly need a small loan to snag everything your kiddos need to head back to school. school supplies
With these costs there are many kiddos heading back to school this year that won’t have new clothes or shoes but also won’t have school supplies. Not having pencils, folders or paper makes for a very hard time to get through class work. Each year I donate school supplies to local schools and churches that help these kiddos start the school year off with supplies! This year I teamed up with some great bloggers, Madame Deals and Wonderful Almonds to make a big change, #GivingBackPacks. The idea behind #GivingBackPacks project is that each of us can do something to help others!
This is the third year for Giving Back Packs project and I’m so excited to be participating this year. Once you give back and see how it greatly effects just one person, it will make you want to help more! Helping a child, knowing that they will have a more positive school day with the supplies they need, donated by you, makes it even better!
The backpack that I got to fill was donated to a local church back pack drive that will be then donated to a local school to help a child in my community!
This time of year is probably one of my favorite times to shop. Not only do I get great deals on back to school supplies but I also get to grab snacks for the kiddos that are great for lunches and after school snacks! Wonderful Pistachios and Wonderful Almonds are great snacks for your kiddos and are available in convenient packs that will be great for lunch boxes.
Wonderful Pistachios tube packs are the perfect snack options that are both nutritious and delicious, and are are available in Roasted & Salted, Sweet Chili and Salt & Pepper flavors. Bottle water is a great addition to any lunch or after school snack.
FIJI Water keeps the whole family hydrated on-the-go and comes in a variety of different sizing perfect for an occasion.

The goal of this campaign is to inspire our readers to also put together back packs to give in their community. What have you done lately for your community?

#GivingBackPacks with Wonderful Almonds, Wonderful Pistachios, and Fiji Water. The Wonderful group provided a back pack, almonds, pistachios, and bottles of water plus a $25 gift cards to each of our bloggers to help them fill the provided back pack of school supplies for a child in need in the community. Just Trying To Save Money received a $25 gift card to purchase school supplies and donate to a local child in need in the community. No additional compensation was received. My opinion as always is 100% my own.

Day 7 Back to School Shopping: Check Prices With Apps

Heading Back To School each year causes a lot of people a lot of headache. Finding the school supplies, clothes, getting haircuts, new shoes, school physicals, and so on is time consuming, not to mention heavy on the wallet! This doesn’t always allow a lot of time to price check and make sure you are getting the best deal. Here are a couple apps I use to find the best deal on things I need to get my kiddos ready to head back to school and save me time and money!

  • ShopSavvy:  ShopSavvy is a great tool, and allows you to scan the barcode of a product to search for it online, see prices at local stores and online retailers, and even load up your ShopSavvy “wallet” with cash so you can purchase directly through the app.
  • PriceGrabber: PriceGrabber allows you to comparison shop and focuses on online merchants instead of local stores, but it can tell you if a product is available online for less than you’re ready to pay in your local retail store.
  • Cheap Text Books: Find the lowest local and online book prices including Rental, Used, eBook, New and International. We also show you the best prices to sell back textbooks. Your phone camera becomes a barcode scanner for quick results. Rent or Buy directly from the app or email the results to yourself, parents or others in your address book. Compare college textbook prices anywhere on your Android device to find the cheap sources.
  • RedLaser: RedLaser lets you scan barcodes or search by typing in a product’s name to compare prices. Local results are sorted by proximity rather than price, but scroll through to find the cheapest deals.
  • Price Check by Amazon: Try this free price-check app, which lets you search by scanning a barcode, snapping a picture or saying or typing in the product name.  This app only checks prices on Amazon.

Day 4 Back to School Shopping: Make a List & Ask The Kiddos

Before I head out for Back To School Shopping I make my list of needed supplies and clothes for my girls. But before I head out I ask my girls what kind of items they are looking for to head back to school and start the year off right! It is always great to hear their ideas as to what type of items they want in their lockers, what kind of back packs and clothes they want!

I do take my girls with me on a couple of the shopping trips, but limit them. I know that may seem silly to not take them with me but there is a really good reason! Cost! If I took my girls with my to get all of their back to school shopping I would need to triple my budget. They get very excited to shop and buy new items for the new school year. They would not look at the budget or prices or sales or how many we already have at home! So I do let them give me ideas and tell me what they love and then I shop without them to get the best deal with sales, coupons and special promotions!

So here are a few questions I ask my girls before I start our Back To School Shopping or while out with them to look and get ideas:

  • Are there styles of clothes you are interested in- colors, designs, brands, stores, etc
  • Are there any items you need to keep you organized this year
  • Are there any must haves this year- certain book bag, particular pair of jeans or a super cute shade of nail polish
  • Are there items we need to get for home to make back to school a breeze- bins, totes, new printers, organizing items, etc
  • What kind of food and snacks are you wanting for breakfast, lunch and after school snacks

Sometimes I do splurge! Not everything falls into my budget or on sale. And as much as I love to save, I would rather buy something a little over my budget and make sure my girls will use the item and love it. Rather then come September and the item can’t be found because they hid it under their bed! So even though they may ask for an item not on sale be willing to spend a little more on one item while you still save a ton on all the other items they need! Believe me, it will make your kiddos happy and hopefully start the new school year off in a good way!
