INSIDE OUT opens in theaters everywhere on June 19, 2015!

Director: Pete Docter

Co-Director: Ronnie del Carmen

Producer: Jonas Rivera

From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

· Director Pete Docter is the Academy Award®-winning director of “Up.” He made his directorial debut with Disney•Pixar‘s smash hit “Monsters, Inc.,” which was nominated for an Academy Award for best animated feature film. Along with John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton, Docter developed the story and characters for “Toy Story,” Pixar‘s first full-length feature film, for which he also served as supervising animator. He served as a storyboard artist on “A Bug’s Life” and wrote the initial story treatment for “Toy Story 2.” As one of Pixar Animation Studios’ key creative contributors, Docter garnered an Academy Award nomination for his original story credit on Disney•Pixar’s Golden Globe®- and Oscar®-winning “WALL•E.”

· Jonas Rivera produced the Academy Award®-winning “Up,” for which he was nominated for best picture. Prior to “Up,” he had worked on nearly every Pixar film since joining Pixar Animation Studios in 1994, beginning with “Toy Story” for which he served as production office assistant. His subsequent credits include “A Bug’s Life” (as art department coordinator), “Toy Story 2” (as a marketing and creative resources coordinator), “Monsters, Inc.” (as art department manager) and the Golden Globe®-winning “Cars” (as production manager).

This year in the 144th Edition of Ringling Bros.®, audiences will see unbelievable acts from 28 legendary China National Acrobatic Troupe members from Beijing. This young group has taken the traditional disciplines of Diabolo, Hoop Diving, Pole Climbing and Bicycle Riding and given them an energized new look and epic physical construction that comes to life during the show.

Click here to purchase tickets for a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey performance in your area!

Here are the showings for U.S. Bank Arena Cincinnati, OH:

chinese ringling brosMy kiddos favorite part of the circus has always been the acrobatics! They love how the acrobats jump, dance and keep you entertained the whole show!

Founded in 1950, China National Acrobatic Troupe (CNAT) was the first national performing arts troupe established by the Central Government of China. They actively combine tradition with innovation and not only preserve many traditional programs but also incorporate acrobatics, music, dance, drama, Chinese Kung Fu, Beijing opera, etc.

During the last 60 years, CNAT has won 53 golden awards at some famous festivals in China and abroad. They have visited 123 countries and regions and have been considered one of the most famous acrobatic troupes in China.

Ranging from 18 to 26 years old, troupe members start practicing at a young age and come from many different provinces and cities in China. The best students from acrobatic schools nationwide are asked to join the China National Acrobatic Troupe, many graduating from the Beijing International Arts School or a provincial acrobatic school.

Bicycle Act
Bicycles of gold appear in this rolling ballet featuring 20 male and female acrobats in an epic stacked moving pyramid built on top of a pair of bikes forming a giant moving fan.

chinese 2 ringling brosPole Climbing
Believe in the unbelievable as this dual vertical pole act, displaying strength and skill, will take your imagination to new heights. Six awesome acrobats will climb, jump, spin and straddle the twin Chinese poles.

You just can’t check out the circus and not see a clown or two! The clowns are my favorite and I love how they all have such different characteristics and makeup!!

Sandor Eke-The Boss Clown hails from a Hungarian circus family but grew up with Cirkus Scott in Sweden, in which his father is the Tent Master and his mother was formerly Ringmaster. Sandor’s earliest aspiration was to be a stuntman, but he first became a professional swimmer before attending the Hungarian State Circus School. From there, he worked all over Europe with Circus Italiano and the Hungarian State Circus, performing at circus festivals in Germany, France, Belgium and Hungary, as well as at Berlin’s Urania Theater and in the musical, Cats, in Hungary. Sandor started his career with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® as a member of a featured Hungarian teeterboard act. Intrigued by the physical aspects of clowning, Sandor eventually brought his unique and irreverent humor to the Ringling Bros.® Clown Alley. Fueled by an ever-present supply of Gummi Bears and inspired by his hero, Batman, and comedian Rowan Atkinson’s bumbling character, Mr. Bean, Sandor brought his repertoire of acrobatic pratfalls to the 136th Edition. In just two years with The Greatest Show On Earth® Sandor was elevated to Boss Clown, a position he was very honored to have received.

As Boss Clown, Sandor serves as the liaison between show management and the alley and was responsible for all the clowns. Returning for his fifth tour of The Greatest Show On Earth, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Presents LEGENDSSM, Sandor will continue his duties as Boss Clown mentoring new and returning clowns.

Sandor says that one of his favorite things about being part of Ringling Bros. is the opportunity to work with elephants. He also admits that he misses his family and that they, too, miss him, disclosing that, when he departed for the United States almost 17 years ago his mother told him, “‘My left eye is crying and the right one is smiling.’ She was sad because I was leaving home but glad to know that I would be happy here!”

female clown ringling brosKelliann Karsten loves to make people laugh. Inspired by some of the funniest women in comedy, including Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and the legendary Lucille Ball, Kelliann makes it her mission to put smiles on people’s faces. From the hometown of Baldwinsville, NY, Kelliann moved to San Francisco to continue her education in performance and was a member of an all-female sketch comedy group. Within the group, the girls were responsible for writing, performing, directing and producing, which allowed Kelliann to gain more experience. She then attended the Clown Conservatory at Circus Center to hone her skills in clowning and graduated in 2008.

Now on her third tour with The Greatest Show On Earth®, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents LEGENDSSM, Kelliann hopes to gain more experience and learn from her fellow Clown Alley members. When she is not performing for Children Of All Ages, Kelliann enjoys reading short stories, watching movies and exploring the different cities she travels to each week. Traveling with Kelliann is her husband, Wages Argott, trumpet player and conductor for the show. The two met and fell in love during the 140th Edition, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Presents BARNUM 200SM.

Globe of Steel

motorcycles ringling brosImagine a 16-foot steel globe with not four, not six, but EIGHT motorcycles orbiting around at 65 miles per hour. Impossible? Not for this thrill-seeking family from Paraguay. The Torres Family, led by Ariel Torres, first joined Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® for the 133rd Edition and has been a perennial fan favorite with record-shattering performances ever since.

Motocross is a popular sport for kids in Paraguay, and the Torres family is no exception. The family raced professionally in many motocross circuits thriving in Latin America. While visiting Argentina, the family members got their first glimpse of the imposing contraption that would change their lives forever. A fellow motocross competitor and friend who also performed for a local circus had an act that included a steel globe with motorcycles racing around inside. As soon as they laid eyes on the act they were hooked immediately. “It was a lot like being on a motocross course condensed into a 16-foot, spherical space,” explains troupe leader Ariel Torres.

Within a year the Torres family had learned and perfected the act and was invited to perform in popular Latin circuses, including Circo Nacional de España, Circo Hermanos Muños, Circo del Sol and Circo Tejedos. The troupe has also appeared on well-known television programs in both Argentina and their native Paraguay.

motorcycles ringling bros 2Now with more than 15 years of experience, the act has evolved with faster speeds, more motorcycles and complex maneuvers. The Torres family describes its technique inside the globe as “very much like what pilots do in an air show.” Blowing a whistle and revving their engines to cue one another, each rider embarks upon a set pattern. Once the riders are in motion, maintaining constant speeds (which can reach up to 65 miles per hour) and the distance from one another is critical. Still, when they are inside the globe they are “completely focused on where everyone else is and are making constant, micro-second adjustments.” Although the Torres family admits that being in the globe can be unnerving at times, they find confidence by feeding off the audience’s energy and applause. To them, this is not just a job; it is their life, their passion, and love for motorcycles that really drive them to give the best performance they can.

This death-defying family is eager to push the limits of their act even further as they make their second appearance with eight motorcycles in Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents LEGENDSSM. The family is a tight-knit group, both outside and inside the globe and is excited to be performing with The Greatest Show On Earth®.

I received something of value from Feld Entertainment as part of their Insider Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

“Purchase of Manhattan” – World Premiere of Concert Opera November 20, 2014

Opera Tells Untold Story of New York’s Hidden Beginning: Could the Island’s Price Tag Really Have Been $24 Worth of Beads?

Performance Continues Historic Partnership between Descendants of Manhattan’s Original Inhabitants and its Dutch Settlers

New York, NY – “Purchase of Manhattan,” a new concert opera that sings to life New York’s hidden beginning, will have its world premiere at the historic Marble Collegiate Church on November 20, 2014. The opera is proudly presented by the Lenape Center, a nonprofit dedicated to continuing the cultural presence of Manhattan’s first inhabitants; the Collegiate Churches of New York, the oldest continuous Protestant congregation in North America; and Collegiate’s multi-faith, global peacemaking initiative, Intersections International.

The groundbreaking opera tells the untold story of how the early Dutch settlers of what was then New Netherland unjustly “purchased” the island of Manhattan from the Lenape people, supposedly for 60 guilders or the modern equivalent of $24. From the perspective of the Lenape, whose culture did not operate on the concept of land ownership, the opera explores the myth of the island’s sale. The project follows a formal, 400-year-old acknowledgement made by the Collegiate Churches of New York, formerly the First Dutch Reform Church, to the Lenape in 2009, recognizing their founders’ role in displacing the native peoples from Manhattan in the 1600s.

“Purchase of Manhattan” is scored by nationally recognized Mohican composer Brent Michael Davids, with a libretto by Abenaki author Joseph Bruchac. Conducted by Sara Jobin, the performance features three solo voices – soprano Alexandra Loutsion, Wampanoag tenor John Bellemer, and baritone Stephen Powell – a full chorus and orchestra, American Indian singers, and Native American flute. The music mingles American Indian and Western European styles in a hybrid mix that unifies both cultures despite their tumultuous past.

November’s opera has grown out of a long Native tradition. In 1913, American Indian woman Zitkala Sa composed the first indigenous opera, “Sun Dance Opera,” and operas written by and about Native Americans have followed. In describing “Purchase of Manhattan” composer Brent Michael Davids’ compositional style, classical music critic Bill Parkercalls Davids, “never glib or facile, but rich in resonance.”

Tickets for the opera can be bought here for $24, a price set to reflect the myth of the Dutch purchase that history books mischaracterize. All proceeds from “Purchase of Manhattan” will go towards the development of a physical Lenape Center in Manhattan for the creation, distribution, and exhibition of Lenape arts and culture, with the purpose of engaging the story of the Lenape peoples within the contemporary fabric of New York City.

“The Lenape Center sees itself as a research platform and a place of action – for native and indigenous artists from around the globe to create new works that critically examine art, history and culture,” said Joe Baker, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Lenape Center.

“Holding the New York City premiere of Purchase of Manhattan at Marble Collegiate Church is historic. Two communities, once separated by culture, race and religion, have worked together to bring this unique performance to New York City residents,” said Rev. Robert Chase, Founding Director of Intersections International. “This unfettered Native American perspective on early interactions between Lenape residents of Manhattan and Dutch settlers helps us all better understand our roots and how we can walk together in pathways of mutual respect and dignity.”

“Native audiences can be proud of their survival and of living culture presented in a contemporary form, and non-Indians can take a fresh look at their own origin myth, the so-called ‘Purchase of Manhattan’,” said Brent Michael Davids, Mohican Composer of the opera.

“We are presenting this opera here at Marble Collegiate Church as part of our yearlong Diversity Series. Using the arts as a medium allows each person who attends to profoundly experience this story, touching the hearts and minds of the audience in ways that mere words could never match, and spurring us to a greater sense of justice as we create the history that generations yet to come will inherit,” said Dr. Michael B. Brown, Senior Minister of Marble Collegiate Church.

“Moving to western Massachusetts five years ago, I thought with gratitude of the Mohican people who had loved and taken care of the land so well for ten thousand years,” said Sara Jobin, Conductor of the opera. “An inquiry into current day Mohican composers brought up Brent Michael Davids’ name right away, and eventually brought us into contact. In the face of global warming and climate change, I am interested in learning more about traditional Native values, and embodying those values in whatever way possible in pursuit of living in harmony with the earth.  May we all walk side by side toward a brighter future together on this beloved planet.”

“I live and grew up on Lenape land in Pennsylvania, the word Lenape is part of my heritage and community,” said Stephen Powell, Baritone Soloist. “I hope to do some service of good through this project and give something back to the original inhabitants of the land I call home.”
